Huawei Next gen Mate X2 Possibly An Inward Foldable Device

Mate X2, The company could be working on a range of products including the next-gen Mate X foldable device. The Mate X2 is expected to have an inward folding mechanism unlike the predecessor and sport displays from both Samsung and BOE.

Evan Blass, a reliable tipster, has leaked a bunch of codenames for the upcoming products including the Mate X2 foldable device. According to him, it will be codenamed Teton. While he didn’t include more info, Ross Young from DSCC has commented below with more details on the upcoming foldable Mate X2.

GOODBYE TO OUTWARD FLEX

He said that the Mate X2 will have inward folding like the recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 2. This is not surprising as earlier design from a patent had shed light on the initial look of how the Mate X2 might look like when folded inwards.

The patent filed at EUIPO showed a similar form factor to the older Mate X and had a vertical sidebar with a secondary display. It also showed an inward folding display with stylus tucked underneath the vertical housing on the side.

BOE AND SAMSUNG TO SUPPLY FOLDABLE DISPLAYS FOR MATE X2

Mate X2’s, Moving on, Ross also mentioned that the display on the Mate X2’s will be sourced from both Samsung Display and BOE from China. This is a great feat for BOE as the company has been increasingly gaining the trust of Chinese companies than before.

It recently got the orders for on-cell OLED displays for the upcoming Mate 40 series. While we exactly don’t know how many orders it got for the Mate X, it is a step closer to success for the company.

CPI INSTEAD OF UTG: WILL IT BE DURABLE?

Coming back, Ross also pointed out that the display panel will use CPI(colorless polyimide) instead of UTG(ultra-thin glass) and this is unfortunate if true. We already know that Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is using an ultra-thin glass and this is more durable than plastic cover which is prone to scratches and dents easily.

Nevertheless, details like the quantity of orders for BOE, Samsung and specifications of the device is still a mystery. Regardless of the quality, Mate X2’s will be the first foldable device to sport a display from Samsung and this is exciting to say the least.

Apart from this, Blass also revealed codenames for devices like Nova, Y9a, FreeBuds Pro and Watch fit which is likely the next smartwatch from Huawei. Let’s wait for more info on the development of these products.
