Covid-19-Recovered-Patients-Immunity-May-Last-Only-A-Few-Months

Immunity to coronavirus in those who have recovered from the infection may last only a few months, two separate studies have suggested.

Scientists said that levels of antibodies depleted by as much as 23-fold in the three-month period after infection and, in some participants, became undetectable.

Boris Johnson previously declared antibody testing could be a “game changer” in the fight against coronavirus. Earlier in the pandemic, the government considered issuing health certificates to those who had contracted the virus.

The latest research suggests that people who have recovered could be vulnerable to a second infection.

Research carried out in China recently concluded that the antibody response is not sufficient to create lasting immunity.

Not only do the results dampen hopes of long-term immunity in those who have been infected, but they also have implications for the development of a successful vaccine.
