NUST and Jolta Electric inks MoU for indigenous development of Li-Ion Batteries of Electric Vehicles

National University of Science and Technology (NUST) through its US-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (USPCAS-E) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jolta Electric, product designer, developer and manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs) kits in Pakistan for collaboration and vis-à-vis provision of research and technical assistance for indigenous development of Lithium Ion Batteries & Supercapacitor Cells for EVs.

The ceremony held at NUST main campus. Dr Adeel Waqas, Principal & Dean USPCAS-E-NUST, and Muhammad Azim, Chairman Jolta Group signed the MoU on behalf of NUST and Jolta Electric respectively. The ceremony graced by presence of Malik Amin Aslam, Advisor to the Prime Minster on Climate Change.

According to details of MoU, a specialized energy storage lab will be established at USPCAS-E NUST, headed by Associate Professor Dr Naseem Iqbal for the development of li-ion batteries and supercapacitors for EVs focusing on R&D activities. The understanding is also in line with the approved National Electric Vehicles Policy (NEVP), aimed at seeing electric vehicles capture 30% of the market. EVs can contribute significantly to the low carbon future.

Advisor to the PM on Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, hailed the University’s role towards finding homegrown solutions to social and industrial problems. Referring the development of EVs, Amin Aslam termed it “future of the world”.

He also praised the NUST for being the first in Pakistan to practically implement university-industry linkages and transfer technology to the industry. He said that the MoU is a step towards indigenization of EVs manufacturing and will empower Pakistan to play its role in global value chain for Electric Vehicles.

Jolta Electric, focus towards fulfilling the requirements by electrifying the auto-industry. Jolta Electric is the EV technology provider, designed key components of electric vehicle kits for two, three, and four wheeler. It’s been through five years of product designing, development & manufacturing experience in China with special reference to EVs.
