Climate change impacts on agriculture faces some hard challenges ahead including land, water and other production components. The reality is that almost one billion people go to bed hungry every night; while two billion people would be added to the global population by 2050. So, there is a need of time to encourage farmers to adopt Climate Smart Practices.

Punjab University Institute of Agricultural Sciences organized Climate-Agriculture awareness seminar on “Climate Smart Agriculture: Building Resilience to climate change”.

The climate-smart agriculture concept reflects the goal to improve the integration of agriculture development and climate responsiveness. It aims to achieve food security and broader development goals under a changing climate and increasing food demand.

Climate-smart agriculture initiatives sustainably increase productivity, enhance resilience, and reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs), and require planning to address tradeoffs and synergies between these three pillars are productivity, adaptation, and mitigation.

The main objective of the awareness seminar about Climate Smart Agriculture is to adopt mitigation strategies, practices such as conservation tillage, remote sensing application, crop diversification and legume integration in changing climate situation was the need of era for agriculture.

For sustainable Climate Smart Agriculture the modeling and remote sensing techniques are required for adopting climate smart strategies. The agriculture in Pakistan was significantly affected with short-term climate inconsistency and long-term climate change.

Farmers’ preferences and willingness is the first priority.  It shows the potential for using a Smart climate practice approach to provide information on climate change adaptation planning at local level.

In the awareness campaign for adopting smart climate practices in agriculture the guest speakers was Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy, PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, and Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad. Prof. IAGS Director Dr. Muhammad Saleem Haider, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
