STAFF REPORT ISB: The National Assembly has recently passed the National University of Sciences and Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016 with a majority vote.The bill was passed with 61 votes in favour and 35 members voted against it.


Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid had moved the bill in the house on behalf of Minister for Science and Technology Rana Tanveer Hussain.


The statement of objects and reasons of the bill says the National University of Sciences and Technology Act, 1997 was notified on June 10, 1997. Initially the university was conceived as engineering university; hence its Rector was required to have engineering qualification only.Over the years, the university has expanded in scope, services and stature and emerged as a leading comprehensive university in public sector with the objective of giving the responsibility of the affairs of NUST to be a best suited education manager in future it is important to widen the choice for selection of the Rector.
