STAFF REPORT ISB: Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has recently organized a 5-day training workshop on `Nurturing Satellite Remote Sensing application for water management in collaboration with the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

“The stand alone physical models based on hydrology, hydraulics or meteorology have become limited in predicting the state of freshwater availability,” said Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Kamran Ali Qureshi, while speaking as a chief guest at the inaugural session of the workshop.

He said that the use of satellites in space is the only platform that offers a routine eye on how freshwater resources are changing due to the interplay of nature and mankind.

The secretary also highlighted that Hindukush Himalaya region including Pakistan is the most urgent user for satellite remote sensing techniques confronted with huge population, limited freshwater resources, and occurrence of floods, droughts, groundwater mining and climate change.

In his remarks, Chairman, PCRWR, Dr. Ashraf, said that the training workshop has provided an opportunity for Pakistani professionals to have a broader overview of the current and future satellite system of water resources management.

Leading trainer from University of Washington, Dr. Faisal Hossain, said that water use is increasingly becoming central to national development; due to its inter dependence with other resources whether it is to grow more food, or producing more energy.
