STAFF REPORT ISB: Highlighting the rising significance of technical exchanges amongst researchers from academia and industries in various emerging ICT fields, experts at the 4th Flagship ICT event IMTIC 2015 have stressed the need for students participation in tutorials and their face to face interaction with experts as it would enhance their technical growth and vision at much higher level.

The event (International Multi-Topic Conference) was organized in Islamabad by the Engineering and Technology (MUET) with the support of Higher Education Commission (HEC), technical collaboration of European Union Erasmus Mundus INTACT and LEADERS, Centre for Telecommunication Infrastructure (CTIF), Alborg University, Denmark, and University of Umm Al-Qura, Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

In his opening remarks, Prof. B.S. Chowdhry, chief organizer of the event and Dean FEECE, Mehran UET, said that the ICT Flagship event IMTIC has become an international forum for researchers to exchange information regarding novel aspects of technology, application and service development within the multidisciplinary framework of ICTs.

He also said that it provides a forum for technical exchange amongst researchers from academia and industries in various emerging fields of Computing, Wireless Communication, Signal Processing, Speech and Pattern Recognition, Computer Systems and Networks, Wireless Sensor Networks, Neural Networks and Control Systems, Power Electronics, Energy Management, Nanotechnology.

Prof. Dr MA Uqaili, VC MUET, in his remarks, said that the event has brought together a wide spectrum of international experts to facilitate a creative environment for the promotion of collaboration and knowledge transfer.

In particular the conference facilitated a dialogue between major industry players, entrepreneurs and academia to help create a roadmap for the development of tangible research environment in the country, he maintained.

He informed that due to interaction and networking of the faculty members during IMTIC conferences, MUET has developed collaboration with several universities of Europe and has hecome partner of several EU Erasmus Mundus external cooperation window projects.

IMTIC, in its seven years since inception in 2008, has so far achieved many milestones, as such participation of more than 2000 attendees, more than 200 authors from 52 countries, more than 80 technical sessions, more than 60 keynote and guest speakers from across the world, he said.

In addition, MUET has been successful in fetching the first ever regional workshop on “FPGA Based System Design” by the Abdul Salam International Centre, Trieste, Italy, to be held in December this year.

Speaking on the occasion, HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed said that the conference will help in disseminating knowledge and latest developments, research and market trends to students, professionals, practitioners and academicians.

He mentioned that it will also support in conducting collaborative research projects as per requirements of local ICT and telecom sector needs and exchange of academia, faculty staff, exchange of undergraduate students, joint supervision of masters and Ph.D. projects.

Prof. Hermann de Meer, Chair of Computer Networks and Computer Communications, University of Passau, Germany, gave his keynote on IT Challenges of an Intelligent Management of Energy Systems.

Prof. Dr. Seshadri, Department of Systems Engineering, University of Arkansas, USA, also talked about how social networks meet mobile multimedia internet.

Dr Ian Grout of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick, Ireland, discussed the role of assistive technology (AT) to support students accessing and participating in education.

A Perspective of the Networks of Future and Smart Cities were presented by the Prof. Dr. Luis Manuel Correia, of Department of Telecommunication Engineering, INOV-INESC Institute, Portugal.

In his remarks, Chairman SUPARCO Maj. Gen (R) Ahmed Bilal highlighted the significance of the university-industry interaction by fostering a problem-solving approach that encourages researchers to work together across departments, fields, and industries.
