STAFF REPORT ISB: Though the government has increased financial allocation for higher education sector up to 2 per cent in the fresh budget, yet education experts believe that it is not sufficient in view of the growing needs of higher education sector in Pakistan.

The federal government has increased allocation for development programmes of Higher Education Commission (HEC) from Rs18.5 billion to Rs20.6 billion for the next financial year. The HEC management terms the budget a healthy departure from previous practices.”Keeping in view the economic climate and ensuing energy crises, such a budget is a healthy departure from previous practices. The PSDP 2009-10 allocation for HEC was Rs22.500 billion, while the revised allocation was Rs18.500 billion. However, the actual release was Rs11.303 billion,” said Aayesha Ikram,the HEC spokesperson.
