Savvy Games Acquires Scopely, Fuels KSA's Global Gaming Hub Ambitions

The completion of the $4.9 billion acquisition of Scopely, a major video gaming company, by Savvy Games, a company owned by the Public Investment Fund, gave Saudi Arabia’s efforts to establish itself as a hub for the global gaming industry a boost.

According to a press release, the acquisition decision, which was decided upon in April, has now been finished after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals.

One of the objectives stated in Vision 2030 is to make Saudi Arabia a leader in the e-gaming industry, and this acquisition, which is being hailed as one of the largest in the market, is anticipated to spur the sector’s expansion in the Kingdom.

The recent success of Scopely’s newest title, Monopoly Go!, “is indicative of Scopely’s ongoing position at the forefront of the global games sector, underpinned by their ability to reach diverse audiences through compelling player experiences,” said Brain Ward, CEO of Savvy Games Group.

Scopely will continue to lead innovation in the games industry for decades to come with the help of Savvy’s long-term investment, he continued.

Star Trek Fleet Command, Stumble Guys, Scrabble Go, and Yahtzee with Buddies are just a few of the free-to-play franchise games that Scopely is working on.

The press release states that Scopely will join Savvy as a stand-alone business unit. With this acquisition, Scopely will be able to expand its cross-platform strategy to offer services to new markets like PC, console, and other game genres.

Walter Driver, co-CEO of Scopely, said, “By combining our knowledge and resources with Savvy Games Group, we will create an even brighter future for the games industry.

“As a part of the Savvy Games Group portfolio, we will be able to harness the collective power of our creativity, dedication to innovation, and world-class talent to shape the future of games,” added Javier Ferriera, co-CEO of Scopely.

J.P. Morgan served as the deal’s principal financial advisor to Savvy Games Group, and Latham and Watkins served as the deal’s principal legal advisor.

Gamers Without Borders and Gamers8: The Land of Heroes will be featured across the SEF ecosystem thanks to a sponsorship deal that Saudi Esports Federation and Savvy Games Group announced in May.
