The Livestock & Dairy Development Board (LDDB) will host a national workshop on Wednesday to discuss “Genetic Improvement of Livestock Breeds in Pakistan”. According to an LDDB official, Pakistan has a diversity of Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) in the form of several breeds of livestock — with a potential to contribute significantly towards milk and meat production in the country. “But the productivity of local animals of Pakistan is quite low, mainly due to poor inherent genetic potential,” he added.

To overcome this situation, the LDDB in partnership with the Animal Science Institute of National Agriculture Research Center has developed a concept paper for the PSDP project, namely ‘Coordinated National Program for the Genetic Improvement of Livestock Breeds for Milk & Meat’, the official stated. He informed that LDDB’s upcoming national workshop, to be held on January 6 at the National Agriculture and Research Council, Islamabad, would ensure a consensus is built on the proposed project. The workshop is focused on productivity enhancement of livestock sector by increasing the genetic potential of farm animals. National Food Security & Research Secretary Dr Ghufran Memon, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Jehanzeb Khan and Food Security Planning & Development Member Dr Hamid Jalil are expected to be present during the workshop.
