Marvel’s Avengers has been out for about 2 months and it’s been a bit bumpy. After several years in development, the game came out to a lukewarm reception. After a few weeks, the game’s player counts declined below a thousand on Steam.

Needless to say, it hasn’t been making the same kind of money that any of the Avengers movies have. Square Enix has reported a loss of 6.5 billion yen, which is about $63 million. Marvel’s Avengers reportedly sold about 3 million copies and the game cost $100 million to make. Marvel’s Avenger’s supposedly makes up a good portion of that $63 million loss.

Of course, there are microtransactions in the game for cosmetic items so the game is still likely generating some revenue. Outside of that, it’s tough to say how well the game is still selling after 3 months. Marvel’s Avengers was supposed to have a big content update with new playable characters in October but it was delayed. The lack of new content and the issues still present in the game have caused a lot of frustration with players, leading to a drop-off in active players.

Perhaps the game will have a resurgence in 2021 when it hits next-gen consoles and there are new characters. Spider-Man is also set to join the roster on the PlayStation version in 2021, which caused its own controversy.

Marvel’s Avengers is currently out on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. An Xbox Series X/S and PS5 version is slated for next year.
