Most smartphone devices and computers automatically adjust the time, however analogue clocks need to be manually moved forward an hour in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the ACT.

A way to remember how to change clocks for daylight saving is ‘spring forward’ at the start, and when it ends in autumn, it’s ‘fall back’.

The change means Sydney and Melbourne are now an hour ahead of Brisbane, 90 minutes in front of Darwin and three hours ahead of Perth.

Queensland has long debated whether to join in on daylight saving, but Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk ruled it out two years ago saying the issue is too divisive.

Australia now has five active time zones: Australian Eastern Daylight’s Time (AEDT), Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT), Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) and Australian Western Standard Time (AWST).
