Biodiversity Technology Times and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in collaboration with Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) and International Islamic University (IIU) organized the celebrations of International Biodiversity Day (IBD) at PCRWR auditorium.

This year’s theme of IBD is “Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity”. The theme was chosen to mark the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and to highlight progress made in the achievement of its objectives at the national and global levels.

Chief Guest of the event, Jia Wei, First Secretary (S&T), Embassy of People’s Republic of China in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, addressing the audience said that Chinese government and people are fully committed to conserve biodiversity at every level.

“China as one of the early signatory nations of CBD, who has been actively participating in international affairs relevant to this Convention”, he further added.

Biodiversity is a common good, an invaluable legacy formed over the course of millions of years, and capital to transmit to future generations. In its definition, it includes the exceptional variety of the forms of life on Earth, as well as the natural environments where these forms developed – the ecosystems.

The speakers highlighted that biodiversity is not inexhaustible. Human interventions – extensive exploitation of resources, unsustainable patterns of consumption, industrial pollution causing climate change – are resulting in irreparable damage to biodiversity.

A large number of audience from different walks of life witness the event.
