CHLORINATION IS the most suitable option to resolve growing problem of microbial contaminant in water under existing socio-economic and socio-technological scene in Pakistan, said by Dr Muhammad Aslam Tahir, Chief Research Officer Pakistan Council for Science and Technology.


Dr. Tahir mentioned that analysis of ultra-filtration (UF), ultra-violet (UV) disinfection, ozonation, and chlorination proved that water chlorination is the most suitable solution for provision of safe drinking water. He expressed that other water treatment solutions need certain technical expertise to maintain and operate them, which is missing in common. Thats why the other treatment solutions are not safe for public.


To provide safe and clean drinking water government launched several water quality treatment initiatives in past, but those couldnt achieve the desired result. The main challenge is their sustainability, selection of appropriate technology, post installation maintenance and operations, and especially the ownership of the plants.


Talking about the current initiative of provincial governments for safe drinking water, he established that using UF technology is probably unsuccessful option, while chlorination system for disinfection of microbial contamination is the most suitable solution. In combination with chlorination system with filtration technology like sand filtration is more effective for removal of turbidity as well as bacterial contamination. This is a user friendly technology which can be maintained easily.
