STAFF REPORT KHI: Solar energy offers security and independence to businesses and the individual consumers of Pakistan. Costing lower than grid electricity, a smaller set-up time and smoother integration with the existing energy systems, the technology offers a viable solution to create a diversified and greener energy mix.

Pakistan is located on a sun belt with potential capacity for solar photovoltaic installation at 1,600 GW, which is 40 times greater than the present consumption.

Reon Energy Limited CEO Inamur Rahman said, “With decreasing panel costs and the recent climate change talks in Paris has attracted massive renewable energy funding. It is imperative that Pakistan should invest itself further into these technologies. Initiatives such as the 200 KW at the Wah Medical College, installed by Reon, if carefully studied and replicated, shall give phenomenal results.”

Reon Energy Limited is a part of the Dawood Hercules Group, which is the largest contributor in the private energy sector of Pakistan with a control of 1800 MW of power generation capacity.

The company held ventures with the Hub Power Company Limited, Tenaga Generasi Limited, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company Limited, Engro Power Gen and Laraib Energy Ltd.

Rahman said that similar initiatives could accelerate the economic growth and meet the rising energy demands as the industrial sector could install small and medium scale panels on-site for meeting their demands.
