STAFF REPORT ISB: A seminar with the theme Fiscal Space for Investment in Agriculture – A review of Taxes and Subsidies in Agriculture in Pakistan was recently held by Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSandR). The objective of the seminar was to have an insight on the research findings on net fiscal position in agriculture sector.


The researchers, experts from MNFSandR and PARC were present on the occasion. The in-camera session entailed several view points from the whole lot of the agriculturists and economists. The study was sorted out by MNFSandR in consortium with International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).


The majority of the speakers were of the view that a specified targeted research was the need of the hour, and the makeshift relief packages and subsidies are only scanty and restorative breathers for the agri sector whereas, for a long term plan an intensive research identifying different variables that govern the agri sector finances must be carried out.


Experts also shed light that agriculture sector was the backbone of the countrys economy contributing 21% to the GDP and provided the right financial policies, it can hike up significantly.
