ICT a must for sustainable development

Staff Report ISB: World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) with the theme “Innovating Together: Enabling ICTs for Sustainable Development” was held recently in Geneva, Switzerland. The summit aimed at creating an efficient mechanism for coordination of multi-stakeholder implementation activities, information exchange, creation of knowledge, sharing of best practices and continues to provide assistance in developing multi-stakeholder and public/private partnerships to advance development goals. WSIS characterizes the worlds mega annual gathering of the ICT for development community.

Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecom, Anusha Rahman represented Pakistan and presented policy statement. She said, “The primary objectives of the telecommunication sector are to abet socio-economic growth through integrated policy which is in accordance with post 2015 sustainable development goals. She further that the speedy embracing of data consumption in Pakistan and usage of information communication technologies (ICTs), Pakistan is in the process of taking policy and legislative measure accordingly.”

Anusha said that the government was firmly committed to nurture the ecosystem of ICTs by the development of Apps and services.

The minister also participated in a Dialogue on “Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals and WSIS Action Lines”. Anusha Rahman stressed on the spreading telecommunication services across the country and also highlighted the remarkable initiatives taken by the government for boosting access of ICT services. She also held bilateral meetings with the delegates of the United Arab Emirates in which both the sides agreed for mutual cooperation in areas of common interest.
