Cellos mocking PTA orders on Night Packages

STAFF REPORT IBD: Cellular companies rejecting the orders of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) continued to provide their customers with day-night and SMS packages, arguing that there exist no rules about such packages.

PTA had ordered closure of the night packages by Monday night, but the facilities were not suspended.

It is to be mentioned here that the government of Pakistan had directed cellular companies to stop free of cost packages at night saying that such facilities were contrary to the social values in Pakistan. A PTA official talking to a German news organization cited the moral degradation of youth as the reason behind the decision.

An order issued by the PTA said that all cellular companies would end free phone calls and the free text messages from September 2 at night, however, these packages are still going on.

While informing about the details, the PTA spokesman Talib Dogar said they received so many complaints that such free of cost messages are causing decline in the characters of boys and girls as these popular free packages enhance telephonic connections between the opposite genders.

He maintained the government cannot allow young boys and girls to flirt one another in this way as in the Pakistani conservative society the connection between opposite genders are considered as unacceptable; however, the connection between opposite genders in the people belonging to middle class is termed as a trivial activity.

About 60 per cent or more population of Pakistan has the facility of mobile phones. Five cellular companies working in Pakistan have introduced such several packages to attract attention of maximum consumers through which the people can telephone at night.

A high official of Pakistani Mobile Phone Operating Company told on the condition of anonymity that mobile phone operators can face loss financially as a result of implementation on these new regulations.
