Potato is an important member of the family Solanaceae. It is grown and consumed all around the world and is one of the main vegetable cash crop. In Indo-Pak subcontinent, potato was introduced by Portagues and British started its cultivation in 19th century. Potato is an appetizing, nutritive and highly digestible vegetable containing 80 ml water, 17 g carbohydrates, 2 g protein, 0.4 g fiber, 10 mg calcium, 0.7 mg iron, 0.1 mg thiamine, 0.03 mg riboflavin, 1.5 mg nicotinamide, small amount of ascorbic acid, vitamin C and negligible amounts of fats. Therefore, it contains highest energy value.
Pakistan takes three crops of potato annually as it is grown in plains and mountains of the country due to different ecological conditions. Main potato growing areas are present in Punjab province. About 86 per cent of the potato growing areas in the country are present in Punjab and Punjab province produces about 88.3 per cent of the whole potato production in the country. Major potato growing districts in the province are Sialkot, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Okara, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Khanewal, Gujranwala and Narowal. Autumn crop share in the annual production is about 75 per cent, spring crop share is about 10 per cent and summer crop share is estimated about 15 per cent. Here we will only discuss about the autumn crop. Although potato production in Pakistan has increased many folds but it’s per acre yield is far less than in other parts of the world. Non-availability of quality seed, spread of stem and foliage diseases, soil/seed-borne diseases, lack of high yielding varieties, low fertilizer input, lack of production technology knowledge among potato growers are the major issues of low potato yield in Pakistan. We can increase per unit area yield by improving our management practices, irrigation system, integrated pest management and improving post harvest handling techniques.
We are giving production technology table that answer the maximum question that raised by potato growers. We also provide another table of pest problem and their chemical control. By following tables farmers can increase their per acre yield by overcoming the problems of non availability of production technology knowledge.
