STAFF REPORT LHR: Pakistan needs to shift its focus from the conventional agriculture methodology to modern farming techniques in order to curtail post-harvest losses as well as ensure proper wheat storages at production areas.
?Modern cold storages, testing laboratories and conducting local trainings were the need of the hour, as country?s agriculture products? share was meager in the fast growing high-price super markets,? said Harvest Trading CEO Ahmad Jawad while talking to media here.
He said that it?s time to focus on the unexplored potential of dairy industry and horticulture sector to push the overall agriculture growth rate.
The Harvest Trading CEO said that Pakistan could not become an agriculture country in the true sense until conventional agricultural methods were replaced with modern farming techniques and hybrid technology.
Ahmad proposed agricultural experts must be invited to find ways and means for increasing per acre yield, proper training in crop management besides reactivating agricultural research institutions.
To a question, he said that currently, Pakistan?s sugarcane and non-basmati yield was 40 percent and wheat and cotton yield was 20 percent lower than global benchmarks.
